OpenAI Failed To Deliver the Opt-Out Tool It Promised By 2025

OpenAI claimed in May that it began work on a platform that would enable creators to decide whether or not their creations should be involved in its AI training data. However, seven months later, these features still haven't been shared.

At the time, OpenAI stated that the application, named Media Manager, would "find copyrighted images, text, audio, and video" to express artists' preferences "across different sources." It was meant to prevent some of the company's most severe competitors and protect OpenAI from legal issues associated with intellectual property.

Media Manager's creation has not yet been updated by OpenAI, which also neglected to meet its self-imposed goal of operationalizing the tool "by 2025."

IP issues

To make estimations, including that someone will leave a bite mark on a burger, AI algorithms such as OpenAI examine data sets to identify trends. As it intended the application, OpenAI claimed that it was working with regulators and considered Media Manager would "set a standard across the AI industry."

Fair use

Experts don't ensure that Media Manager will ease producers' worries or significantly address the legal problems around AI and IP usage, even if it generally materializes.

There are problems ensuring adherence to legally mandated creator security and possible compensation needs. This is particularly true considering the rapidly changing and possibly different legal landscapes across national and local jurisdictions.

A Confrontation

To stop its models from duplicating training samples when Media Manager is not present, OpenAI has added filters, albeit faulty ones. Additionally, the business manages its argument of fair use protections in the lawsuits it is facing, arguing that its models create transformative rather than plagiaristic products.

According to OpenAI's public claims, training competitive AI models without the employ of intellectual resources, whether authorized or not, would be "impossible." By the company's January submission to the U.K.'s House of Lords, "reducing training data to public domain books and drawings made more than a century ago might yield an exciting experiment, but would not offer AI systems that meet the requirements of today's citizens."
