Today’s news release is about President Trump dismissing the 2023 AI Executive Order signed by former President Joe Biden which aimed at reducing the AI risks to consumers, workers, and national security. President Trump was in action on the first day of his presidency and repealed the order.
Insights into Biden's Executive Order
Former President Joe Biden passed the AI executive Order in 2023. According to this order, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is directed to develop guidelines that provide a helping hand to companies to identify and rectify errors in AI models, especially biases.
In addition, Biden’s order instructs developers of AI systems that pose threats to the U.S. national security, the economy, public health, or safety to share the safety test results with the U.S. government, in line with the Defense Production Act before they were released to the public.
Furthermore, Biden directed agencies to set standards for that testing and address related chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and cybersecurity risks.
Why Trump Repeal the Order?
The critics who joined Trump argued that reporting requirements involved obligations that are difficult to take responsibility for. Also, the reporting requirements forced companies to unveil their trade secrets.
During his election campaigns, Trump promised to abide by the policies that work to support “AI development rooted in free speech and human flourishing” but didn't provide inside depth about the policies. The repeal has halted AI developers from implementing key safety and transparency requirements.
